The question which I get asked mostly by aspiring freelancers is "how do you find clients?". That’s not a very helpful question. Instead the question must be "How might your clients find you?".
These are the 3 things which I did and worked for me:
Create and maintain updated portfolios in global design communities such as Dribbble, Behance and DeviantArt. Update your social media profiles on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. Most importantly create a website with SEO.
Having a unique style is how you standout from the rest. For example if you practice a particular style such as designing minimal logos and become known for it, there's a fair chance for your work to be found by a client who wants to get a minimal logo designed.
In the beginning we get carried away to work in many design sectors. But too many specialties might scare away the client who's looking for a designer specialised in a specific area. For example if you want to buy a good pair of sports shoes, you will go to a sportswear shop rather than a general store. Specializing in one or two complementary sectors will build your experience as well as your brand.
These three strategies have helped me to build a successful freelance design career.
