He was not speaking about marble. He was speaking about truth.
A brand’s identity works the same way. Every business, whether a startup, a growing company or a corporation, already contains its true identity within. It does not need to be invented. It needs to be found, and everything unnecessary removed.
This is Brand Ontology - the study of what a business truly is, beneath the noise of what it thinks it should appear to be.
The Proof
This is what brand identity design, at its most disciplined, actually is. Not the application of visual style to a business, but the work of understanding what a business truly is and compressing that truth into a mark so complete that nothing further needs to be said.
A brief describes what a client wants. Clarity reveals what the business actually is. Brand strategy at this level asks not what the business does, but what it is, its nature, its purpose, its place in the world.
This is what separates a timeless mark from a fashionable one. A fashionable logo applies style to a business. A timeless mark distils the business into form. It must work at the scale of a business card as well as a billborad, in colour and in black and white, today and in thirty years.
For a startup, it means commanding market authority before it has been earned through scale. For a growing business, it means closing the gap between the company it has become and the identity it still presents. For a corporation, it means protecting market authority built over decades through brand positioning that endures.
In each case, the success is a consequence of the truth the design found and set free.
To find a business's true identity and give it permanent form is to say simply, this is what you are. And it is enough.
